Somali Special Forces Strike Kills Senior al-Shabaab Leader

In the first public confirmation of its kind, Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) confirmed for SOFREP that their elite CIA-trained commando unit, Alpha Group, has conducted what was described as a “special[ized] target operation” in the area around the city of Baardheere, located in the Gedo region of southern Somalia. Senior members of Harakat-al-Shabaab were the main focus of the operation.

The headquarters spokesperson for the Somali intelligence agency also made one other fact very clear: This attack was personal. This raid was in retaliation for the failed attack al-Shabaab attempted earlier that day on Sunday, June 21st. On that day, al-Shabaab operatives drove a car filled with explosives into the front gate of one of NISA’s training facilities in the capital city of Mogadishu. Their intent was to detonate the vehicle in order to open the front gate so al-Shabaab fighters could gain entry into the compound and begin inflicting mayhem inside. However, elements of the NISA security forces were able to contain the attack to the gate, killing all of Shabaab’s saboteurs, while, sadly, losing one of their own in the process.
