The thought of a Chinese nuclear powered icebreaker is unnerving, The operational characteristics of heavy icebreaking does not lend itself to nuclear power unless extensive precautions are taken to ensure the integrity of all components of the reactor and its ancillary support equipment. This environment is not a place to start with nuclear propulsion – a nuclear disaster in the arctic would be cataclysmic for everyone on earth.
