We have had Green Berets operating in that area for awhile now. I don’t think any risk assessment could have predicted an ambush of that magnitude in that area. The threat assessment probably didn’t support having air assets or a quick reaction force (QRF) on stand-by. ISIS has been stellar at remaining agile and adaptive to exploit gaps in our operational security. They don’t have to write risk assessments or move through a lengthy bureaucratic process to get operations approved. Their decentralized structure allows units at the lowest level to take action whenever they see an opportunity. That’s how they hit us like they did in Africa. Tragic. Quote from my Green Beret buddy with whom I shared the article.
De Oppresso Liber! Again the harsh reality of our chosen profession has extracted another toll. The toll of life is never small but always heavy. Special Forces Green Berets again have paid the toll in order to free the oppressed and provide a foreign nation an opportunity to live and prosper in a free society. We are reminded that our profession is without equal, we live among the oppressed, we eat what they eat, we sleep as they do, drink the water they drink; endure the same hash environments they live in. We teach them, train them, heal them, fight beside them and at times give our lives alongside them. We accept this way of life as a calling from our nation and for many of us our God. As it has been said many times in the past; “Green Berets, A Special Breed of Man” many people ask why a person would accept long periods of time away from our families and friends, subject themselves to austere hostile environments when there is no declared war, die for someone they do not even know and for many Americans, die in a country they have never heard of. The answer is: every Green Beret has his own reasons, his own personal calling, there is no formula no common denominator, it truly is a Special Breed of Mankind. John Stuart Mill said it best! “A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself” Freedoms Force Multiplier, the Special Forces Green Beret. To my Special Forces brothers in arms, De Oppressor Liber! Honor our brothers that have fallen in Africa, Liberators of the Oppressed again have paid the toll; they Honor our Profession and Breathe Life into our calling.
Good Reporting keep it up. Sad day
