I have lived in both Eugene, and Madras (50 miles north of Bend). I went to college in Eugene, but it was in the early 80's. Haven't lived there since '87. The Eugene-Springfield area is much like Reno-Sparks, but much more artistic and liberal. The sizes of the communities compare (E-S, and R-S), and Bend is smaller at around 85,000. Both Bend and Eugene are nice communities. Bend is expensive, like South Shore, because it is a resort, and the climate is much like Reno, not Tahoe. The criminal element hasn't seemed to have invaded Eugene as badly as it has Portland. Where I live now, we get news from Eugene, and stories of crime and violence are not as numerous as in Portland. It's a beautiful town, filled with much to do, an hour from the coast, an hour or two from skiing. Good food, music, a smaller airport...I loved living there, but I was in my 20's. If you don't ski, hike or mountain bike, Bend is just Bend. Beautiful town. I liked it alot. Both towns are steadily growing. Hope that helps. Oh, Bend is more conservative. They try to be liberal, but the ranchers and long time Oregonians who have been there won't allow too much change. Outsiders from out-of-state move in and try and change things, but conservative Oregonians do not give their rights up, or their guns, graciously! LOL
Hi thanks! It's my cousin I'm worrying about - she is considering a move to London for a PhD program. I don't want her to. Thank you for the feedback on that part of Oregon though; I have been thinking of moving up to Eugene or Bend. From what I've heard of Portland it's fun, so I'm glad to hear of the other side. I suppose it depends on how gentrified your hood is? ;) Thanks for sharing the side of Portland I haven't heard people discuss. For me it would be a boyfriend not girlfriend (I have to say that in case my SOFREP writer crush sees this) and I have a big dog, but I don't know that I could live in a city anyway. Do not like :p
To Tessa: I would suggest someplace safe, not Europe...NOT Portland, Oregon, which is a 'safe zone' for drug cartel, gang bangers, paid protestors and violent rioters, drug users and all of the scum that attaches to that. Drive by shootings are frequent, women and children go missing on a fairly frequent basis...human trafficking is huge there. But, hey, they have great restaurants, and good microbrews, and lots of art, and Music, and bars everywhere...and The Zoo, and OMSI, and Powell's Books, and the Portland Trail Blazers!!! And you've got liberal fucks ramming everything down your throat until you can't breathe. Portland, Oregon... I used to love living there! Not anymore...don't recommend it to a single person!!! But if you're a single woman, and you find yourself there, learn to protect yourself, or get a girlfriend, cause they're everywhere, too, unless you want a boyfriend, or a big dog!!!
My cousin may be leaving for grad school in London, and I'm terribly concerned that she is going to be so close to all of that. She got all set up in her PhD program in Oregon this fall and then her advisor got a position in London and so she needs to decide whether to move to England, find a new advisor, or apply to different schools here in the States. It's really quite appalling that that happened to her... she was accepted to other PhD programs here but picked THIS one, and moved across the country for it.
