Any idea how his own "superiors" felt about his actions? How his countrymen viewed him?
Interesting - great link - there are probably many more instances unknown to but a few....
Wow! Reading that gave me the chills! Thanks for the interesting link, Ian.
On duty near Moscow during tense times between our 2 countries, a man sees on the screen of his early warning bunker that 5 ICBMs will reach Russia in 20 minutes, and it is this man's responsibility to report it. He has lived his life in a Communist dictatorship which represses individual free thought and allows and rewards only obedience to the state. This man ignores state protocol, considers all the possibilities in his own mind, defies his own clearly known duty, and reports a malfunction to the chain of command, most likely preventing an all out nuclear war. Stanislov Petrov is the unsung hero of the 20th century, and though he probably didn't believe in Him, I have no doubt God had a hand in putting him in that bunker at that moment. Thank you Stanislove (and God!) and may you rest in peace and comfort. Thanks, Travis.
Great Cold War history Vasilis. Thankful he made the right choice. Thank you for sharing.
