Re-reading this article, and updating my own thoughts - First and foremost, thank you for taking the time to share what is a very thoughtful article. I have had a truck f(or SUV or JEEP) or many years and like the flexibility it gives me. One thing I outfit each with as soon as I can after purchase is some sort of vault. I just installed the Tuffy full length vault under the back seat of my truck. This affords me a 2nd level of security if broken into as well as some peace of mind if I have to "valet" park for some reason, or someone leaves the truck unlocked. Knowing what I put into it is going to be safe means I can put whatever I think I may need in it and be confident it will still be there in an emergency. I have given quite a few people a "Dead On" wrecking hammer for their kits as well. It is an indestructible tool for everything from battering, chopping, staking, grappling hook or prying and can be quite intimidating when presented defensively. equally important for the kist is some sort of comms device besides your cell phone. (I use "Beartooth) The last item I would mention is the plan. My family knows where to go, when to go and how to get "there" in case of an emergency. Any plan is better than no-plan! Each member of the family has a written plan included in their car/vehicle emergency bag - where to go, phone numbers, emergency contact information (as well as on their cell phones), medical information.
Really cool subject. I used to include a gas mask, small raft, and bicycle that can be stored in parts to save space, but easily put back together as quick as changing a spare tire.
Some great info to help people out in being prepared. I'm curious if y'all have reviewed or tested any items from ITS Tactical. For example, I've been playing around with their jute cord. Paracord with a strand of jute added in. Works great as a firestarter. Also, I can't remember where I got it but there are companies out the that sell field expedient kits. A long handle and a bag of attachments like shovel, pick, axe and others...an e-tool can only do so much.
Damn, I keep socks & work gloves in there too, completely forgot to write them...thanks Robert!
ZIp ties, clean rag, clean socks, surgical gloves, work gloves, small duffel/backpack to carry all the shit in if you need to leave the vehicle...
