That's some of the most down-to-earth stuff I've read on carry and self defense. I like your approach to the defensive is of the knife. Essentially, go for the kill. There are those in the carry world who warn against the drawing of the weapon until the situation is life or death, for fear of the legal trap of the would-be receiver of the projectile claiming he had no ill intent and was intimitated with the firearm, which puts the armed person in the defendant's seat.
