There was a longstanding rumor (probably bullshit but you never know) that the Russians plan, if they ever invaded was to just surround this area and bypass it. No idea of the truth, but it's a cool story
I remember being at the 2013 NYC Tunnel to Towers with Team Schlitz, where I met an SF Medic from Fort Bragg whose name I believe was Scott. He and I got to talking and I ended up introducing him to Jack Murphy and Joshua Lees. Those 3 got to talking about Pineland and the commanding officer who runs it. I just stayed back and listened, as I had no clue what they were talking about. Later when Jack and I were walking towards the food, I asked him about Pineland and where I could find more information about it. He broke it down and recommend Linda Robinson's, "Masters of Chaos".
The magazine Our State (it's an NC mag) did a good article on the people and area of Pineland. http://www.ourstate.com/patriots-pineland/ Should the balloon ever go up for real, I imagine the Uwharrie might be the place to be to ride it out.
Would be awesome to move down to this part of NC just become a participant in these exercises as a civilian! What an important job--helping with the training of these incredible soldiers!!
