I think the phrase just means on foot instead on on vehicles. It probably originated from the time when cavalry was still in use.
“dismounted operations”? Does that mean they were on foot instead of on camels, horses, hover boards or motorized vehicles? I’m glad the rest of the mission was a success, that they managed to protect the helpless while going after the bad guys, and hope whatever caused the “friendly fire” is something that can be resolved. RIP Rangers.
