The Pic of the Day: The first ever image of a black hole

Per NASA’s press release:

A black hole is an extremely dense object from which no light can escape. Anything that comes within a black hole’s “event horizon,” its point of no return, will be consumed, never to re-emerge, because of the black hole’s unimaginably strong gravity. By its very nature, a black hole cannot be seen, but the hot disk of material that encircles it shines bright. Against a bright backdrop, such as this disk, a black hole appears to cast a shadow.

    A rather large leap of faith is required to be able to buy into this. Not understanding the science to the degree necessary to grasp this, we are reduced to believing this is true because an eclectic group of egg-heads tell us it’s true. These folks are so very passionate about their work and beliefs… it makes me wonder if their objectivity is sound. “The Earth just happens to be the right size for this detection process…” What are those odds??
    I’m not a total skeptic, just trying to skirt full-frontal gullibility. I’d like to hear what A-Blast says of it.
