I had a company of Albanian commandos attached to us at the Mosul airfield (OIF-1) 2003. Their equipment was old soviet era, RPDs , AKs and RPGs. They were their country’s contribution to the fight and they were honored to get to serve along side the U.S. Army. What they lacked in equipment, they made up for it with their sprit. We had them on 3 guard towers and used them for dismounted patrols around the airfield area with 101st Pathfinders acting as C2. They were involved in a brief fire fight, used good fire and maneuver with our pathfinders and recovered a AK. I put three of them for ARCOMs and a MG Petraeus presented they along with CG coins to the whole squad involved. The Albanian defense Minister was present and it was a great boost for them and solidified our cooperation between countries.
Indeed. But, then again, Albanian living standards are quite low.
$300/month???
If you’ve ever been to Albania, you wouldn’t blame these poor souls.
The country is a vestigial reminder of the failures of communism, manifested in a “sovereign nation.”
