Recently, it has been made known that the Japanese MoD is already in the project planning stage of fully developing an in-house Unmanned Aerial Systems/Remotely Piloted Aircraft program. By ‘in-house’ I mean ‘they’re not going to access the current standard for such tech.’ They will do what they always do and alter anything they do get, reverse engineering it, tossing out shit they don’t need, and manga-fy that shit to fit their needs.
I’d also like to note here that when I say, “has been made known,” what I really mean is “that cat is out of the bag.” People knew before it was made public, obviously. Some of those people are me. [Obviously.]
This news is pretty hot stuff, given their projected tech goals, over the projected timeline: UAS ISR (that’s Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance, by the way) platform for regional deployment in NLT 10 years. (That’s ‘No Later Than’ just in case you ain’t trackin’ my vernacular.) And a UAS ***fighter*** (<–pay super close attention to that shit) in NLT 20 years.
Yeah. Fighter. Think…Viper, or Hornet, or anything with F in the nomenclature. Those are fighters, right. “F” for fighter. Not strike platforms like say our MQ-9 Reaper. (That shit couldn’t ‘fight’ a paper bag. It has a hard enough time with a strong wind.)
Nope. They mean fighter *jet* aircraft.
To show how serious these guys are about their turf, and how much bullshit they’re having to put up with from everyone in the neighborhood, the Japanese also recently unveiled their own iteration of the stealth fighter. It’s called the X-2 Shinshin (“Heart Spirit” or “Spirit of the Heart”). The X-2 ain’t exactly state o’ the art by other fifth gen fighter standards, but they’ll get it there.
That little sucker was built by Mitsubishi. That’s right. The same guys that brought you the Evo. They can drift…AND kill shit.
So, along with this fifth gen stealth fighter, and these master plans to R&D ISR as well as fighter drones (not the accepted nomenclature), the MoD will shortly drop their budget request for amping up the overall defense system for the entire country. That’s all the planes, trains, and automobiles, kids. From that X-2 up there, to their suped up missile system (that more than doubles their current coverage and range), to armored and amphibious systems, to better counter-sub and sub warfare, to their SOF and standard maneuver units. That also covers the F-35s they’ll be getting (and altering).
The shit is real. I know I’ve been saying it for awhile, not that it matters. (But I have.) I’m still waiting for some General to show up at a to-do with his Nihonto (sword) tucked into his belt, flanked by F-35Js (“J” for Japan) in Robotech humanoid configuration.
Their F-15s are already significantly ahead of the platforms they’d be dogfighting in that neck of the woods. I can’t even imagine what kind of kinky shit they’ll be doing with Japanified Lightnings or fighter-drone swarms patrolling the entire Home Islands quadrant.
I mean, I admit…it’s sexy as hell to think about all these developments, but how have I been one of like eight legitimate voices on Earth pointing at the Japanese and saying, “Dudes…is anyone else seeing this? Dudes? Dudes…!?
<Rambling in Analytic Trance> The pieces are all sliding nicely together with all this. From the Emperor saving face and bowing out, to any relevant conflict-preclusive element of their constitution being nixed, to the Ministry of Defense having fully armed and operational Elite Tier 1 Operators, to these flying killer robots. The nation of Japan has managed to slip past every modern industrial First World problem, maintain a solid (if not slightly pussified and dwindling) populace, and slide in (just like their Olympic relay team) as a dominate dark horse economically, militarily, and culturally.
I know I always say this: But watch this space. These dudes are *primary* players in the unfolding of this world’s future…and everyone’s been ignoring them.
