Of all the articles I have written at SOFREP since coming on board full-time, I had no idea that a Saturday morning piece on a British royal wedding would cause such a stir but it seems to be the nature of the world that we currently occupy — everyone has to pick a side and be mad about something.
Let’s just get the obvious on the table. I’m a girl. The only girl on staff at the moment and for the most part, not a single one of the guys cared about the wedding. I admittedly live streamed it on my iPad while I was driving back to Cleveland from New Jersey in the wee morning hours. I wanted to see the dress and got a kick out of a black American preacher taking a whole bunch of Brits to church in a thousand-year old cathedral. Watching the nonverbal communications those blue bloods broke out was priceless. I don’t agree with Rev. Curry’s politics but it was still fun to watch.
I also watched because I wanted a little break from news of school shootings and aircraft crashes and tragedies of various shapes and sizes. So sue me, it was nice to check out two people getting hitched in fairy tale-style. That said, I stand by the article about Harry’s military service. I had no idea I would need a flak jacket for saying he earned that uniform by actually serving in combat. So for fun, and because it’s a Monday morning, let’s address some of the more fun trolls, shall we?
He comes from a family of Nazi sympathizers and actual Nazis.
Yup, true. Not going to deny it. His family line is that of German nobility and his grandfather’s german sisters married Nazi’s. Plenty of other nasty little secrets in that Windsor family closet. But I assume that means everyone else’s ancestors and relatives are saints right?
Does this mean that anybody who has someone in their family line who did heinous things are they themselves, the same brand of heinous? Because if that’s the case, I think we all have someone in our family tree that poisons the whole thing. What a horrible standard to be judged by.
And yes, I am acutely aware of a 20 year old Prince Harry making the asinine decision to wear a Nazi uniform to a costume party. He apologized. I would like to believe that people can come back from their worst mistakes and his record since that extremely poor choice leads me to believe he has.
His father wasn’t Prince Charles – Diana had an affair and he’s really James Hewitt’s son
Well he definitely looks like Hewitt and he has his hair and his nose, no doubt. Still unproven.
But, your point is? What on earth did that have to do with talking about whether or not he earned the uniform he wore? Nothing.
The Brits are NOT our cousins and we threw off their yoke of tyranny in 1776
I am as proud an American as you will ever find. A die hard patriot to this republic. But I am not going to get all salty about a revolution that happened 200 years ago against a nation that has been for the better part of a century, one of our closest allies. They may not be your cousins, but they are mine. 23 and me says so. But they also say I am German and Basque and French and West African (seriously) so what do they know?
He was never really in harm’s way and he had bodyguards along for the ride
Well, first of all, that’s not true according the regular blokes that served alongside him and even some other Yanks who ran into him during their combat tours. Even if he did have security at any point, I am not sure what good that did him in the cockpit of an Apache or as a FAC. And let’s just address the basic fact of the matter – I have to wonder how many of the naysayers, if they had his money and ability to say thanks but no thanks to being forward deployed, would still have volunteered to go? Not once, but twice.
I suppose the reason I am even bothering to answer these complaints is because of a serious piece I wrote early on for SOFREP. One about Elusive Valor — the feelings of guilt carried by those who have served but never in a combat role. So when I hear people not willing to give credit where credit is due, to trash talk a guy because he was born into a monarchy — as if that somehow diminishes any of his time in service or the countless hours and dollars he’s put towards veterans causes since — yeah, it chaps my ass a bit.
Maybe one day Disney will give me a camo-wearing princess to root for — until then , I will take my fairy tales where I can find them!
